Theres a good 20 min docunentary on YT. All 4 of them seemed decent blokes, like saying thank you to the driver as they got out of their limo. They didnt have it easy pre fame days, they served their apprenticeship no doubt.

Reading a lot of the comnents on the YT videos, Mick Tucker was held in very high esteem, described as being one of the best drummers around

Re: Sweet - much maligned
The drummer from The Rubettes used to play in a pub band in the mid 80s.

Every Sunday night at The Lord Napier, Goodmayes.

Did a tour with Queen and Paul Rodgers with a company called Redburn Transfer (recently went bust) the owner - Chris Redburn was the bass player in a band called Kenny.

Let’s do the bump.

David L - as you say, they served their apprenticeship and were a proper band. They were as good as any I saw back in the early '70's.

The band I used to go and see featuring Bruce Bisland The Sweet's drummer, also featured an incredible singer called Mal McNulty, who is now fronting Slade after Noddy's retirement.

I saw them last year at Central Park dagenham, they were fucking brilliant, absolutely flawless, they strangely did a cover of fanfare for the common man, that was surreal

I will graciously bow out of this one, then. Clearly hit a nerve with Poundland Glam fans. Enjoy The Sweetshop.

Fox On The Run is Harry Maguire's favourite. FACT.

(Is it time to discuss The Glitter Band yet? Two drummers! Stomping riffs. And as for the front man,............... Oh.)

Ask Danny Baker what he thinks of that statement.

What? Did he think the Sex Pistols dressed like a bunch of chimps?

Athletico Easthamico 5:53 Sat Jul 27

Really not clear what dressing as chimps has to do with anything?

Baker was there at the heart of punk as it happened. His belief is it changed nothing. If you look at lists of the best selling albums of the late 70s, I think he may be right.

Re: Sweet - much maligned
Punk as a music form/sound had been around a long time before a label/movement and the clothes were lumped on it. Punk bands like the Ramones, Suicide, Television etc had been around for years and others like Hollywood Brats, Rocket From The Tombs, Patti Smith, The Modern Lovers, Stooges, Johnny Moped, England's Glory, MC5, New York Dolls, Pink Fairies, Deviants, Real Kids, Death, Mirrors, Eddie & the Hot Rods, Devo (the list is pretty much endless) are now labelled as Proto-Punk.

Saw them at the height of their fame at the Southend Kursaal. Apart from all the little girls down the front screaming it was a really enjoyable performance. Their hits weren't half bad, but some of the other heavy stuff - used for B sides I think - was even better. Most of us were into the prog rock stuff then, but all were very impressed.

Brickies with make up, the poofy one was an irritating cunt and Chinn and Chapman (the Stock Aitken Waterman of the early 70s) wrote the songs, basically Westlife with beer guts.
All together now "Wig, wam, bam, going to make you my man".
Fuck me there are some Clueless cunts on here

OK, when punk went "mainstream" it shook the tree for a couple of years. That helped all the shit disappear and only the best survived.

I remember watching TOTP and it was Glam Rock, hairy arsed wankers banging out boring guitar solos, The Osmond's, David Cassidy and endless novelty acts.

Thank fuck something changed the musical scene.

As for the late 70s?? Great, the emergence of The Specials, Madness, The Jam, The Clash, The Stranglers, Squeeze, The Undertones and many more.

Unless you were still pining for The Sweet, Slade, The Rubettes, Mud, Showadawaddy, Gary Glitter , Alvin Stardust...…..

Bloody hell I preferred the New Romantic groups.

You forgot to mention Creme Brulee. And Smokey (they were a good outfit, weren't they?)

Yup, punk really shook things up. Below are the best selling albums in the UK from 1977.

Best not look at 1978 as that was dominated by Grease, Saturday Night Fever, ABBA and Boney M, all heavily influenced by The Clash.

Lots of great bands listed in your post. Did they shake up the mainstream? Probably not.

1 Arrival - ABBA
2 20 Golden Greats - The Shadows
3 20 Golden Greats - Diana Ross and the Supremes
4 Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
5 A Star Is Born - Barbra Streisand/Kris Kristofferson
6 Hotel California - Eagles
7 The Sound of Bread - Bread
8 The Johnny Mathis Collection - Johnny Mathis
9 Greatest Hits - ABBA
10 Animals - Pink Floyd

I always thought punk was a response to prog rock?

May well have been, but again, look at the sales of Genesis and Pink Floyd in the late 70s and early 80s. Their commercially most successful periods ever.

Punk was all good fun, but a brief sideshow for the music industry.
